All About Hurricanes

When is hurricane Season?  The hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through the end of November.

The 2005 Season set a huge number of records, including the following milestones:

  • There were 28 named storms, breaking the previous record of 21 set in 1933;
  • The season saw 15 hurricanes. The previous record of 12 was set in 1969.
  • Four major hurricanes - Dennis, Katrina, Rita and Wilma - made landfall, breaking the previous record of three set in 2004.
  • There were four Category 5 hurricanes (Emily, Katrina, Rita and Wilma), breaking the record of two set in 1960 an 1961.
  • The most damaging hurricane ever, Hurricane Katrina, caused damages exceeding $100 billion dollars. (The old record belonged to Hurricane Andrew (1992) with $50 billion in 2005 dollars.

Naming Hurricanes  Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center. The original name lists featured only women's names, but in 1979, men's names were introduced and they now alternate with the women's names. Six lists are used in rotation. Thus, the 2005 list will be used again in 2011.

The only time a change in the list is made is if a storm is so deadly or costly that its future would be sensitively inappropriate. When that occurs, the offending name is stricken from the list and another name is selected to replace it.
